What is it?
Myōga is a variety of ginger and the name usually refers to the plant’s buds and flowers when food is the topic.
How can it be eaten?
Myōga looks like slender shallots and appears in a number of Japanese dishes mainly as a garnish. It is usually finely sliced and added to salads, miso soup, rice dishes, cold noodles, cold tofu and sunomono (a dish with vegetables and/ or seafood seasoned with a vinegar based dressing). Myōga can also be pickled, used in soups, tempura and as a spice.
